Systemwide Concepts

Overview

This lesson focuses on the system-wide concepts that underlie the SAP system. These concepts, organizational elements, master data, transactions, output, workflow, and reporting, are the basic elements designed and utilized to represent a company’s enterprise structure and business processes within the SAP system. Following are brief descriptions of the concepts that will be discussed in more detail in this lesson:

Organizational Elements
A company’s enterprise structure is mapped to the SAP applications using organizational elements.

Master Data
Created centrally and available to all applications and all authorized users. Master data also has an organizational aspect because its information is organized into views that are assigned to organizational
elements.

Transactions
Application programs that execute business processes in the SAP system. Examples include create sales order, change customer master or display a sales orders’ list report.

Output
Represents a message in the SAP system that can be released either manually or automatically. Examples could be faxing purchase orders to vendors or sending order confirmations to customers.

Workflow
A support tool that can be used to optimize the execution of activities. Work steps carried out consecutively can be automated to coordinate the flow of information.

Reporting
Transactions, documents, andmaster data are captured and stored in SAP. Various types of analysis can be run at any time in the SAP system.
